HSBC International has today released the results from its Expat Explorer survey. This is probably the largest ever worldwide survey of expatriates and it contains some interesting information, and some surprises. Some highlights:

According to a new poll by comparis.ch, 43% of German workers can imagine moving abroad. Among young Germans up to 30 years old, this percentage even rises to 73%.

Almost 80% of people who emigrated from the UK are happy with their decision to move overseas, according to the UKForex Happiness Survey among 1,122 British expatriates. This compares with just 51.77% of respondents who were happy with their previous life in the UK.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK has released figures which estimate that 207,000 native British citizens emigrated in 2006. This is the highest number since records began. The top destinations were Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain and the USA.
