Facebook recently announced it would be asking its users to translate its application for free. This is a company that has a bucket-load of VC cash and is ‘allegedly’ worth $15 billion (although some beg to differ, Barry Diller said in the New York Times, “If it was real money, it would be insane, but since it isn’t really, then why bother. It doesn’t mean anything, it is a phantom, false valuation. Let them sell for $14 billion, 998 million, and then I’ll believe them.”) Facebook today is only available in English, Spanish and German.

We’re poor, but have [somehow] managed to have eight languages present on the site over the last couple of years. In part, this is thanks to highly appreciated efforts from interns and volunteers.

Our new applications for jobs, housing and classifieds were launched last August and are already available in six languages (Deutsch, English, Español, Français, Italiano, Nederlands), with Russian and Portguese in the pipeline. We were really happy to see that people looked at 746,360 pages on these applications in February. We have some great feedback from users and are working hard to make everything work better.

A key area for us is to make sure we are as inclusive as possible. If you are a native speaker of a language not listed above and would like to help out: click here to find out more about translating this part of Just Landed. Unlike Facebook, we are offering some cash for your time and help. We don’t know if we are going to make any money doing this, but we’re happy to take the risk and put in the work our side. Especially as one of our key goals is to provide useful services to as many people as possible, especially those who don’t have access to much choice today.

You are: A motivated individual who is looking for a challenging role in a team working on interesting technology and applications. You’re able to see the “big picture” of what you’re doing, but at the same time be hands-on in developing new applications fast and efficiently to market.

You have: Strong technical capabilities that you combine with an analytic and structured approach. You should also be a good lateral thinker, capable of working round problems and coming up with innovative solutions and bringing a dose of creativity. In addition, you will have a good grasp of spoken and written English. Out of preference, you will be already be legally permitted to work in Spain.

You can: Handle web application development in a PHP, MySQL, UNIX/LINUX stack. Knowledge of Ruby (and Rails) may be useful. You know your way around the open source world, have spent too much time playing with different technologies and know what it means to go out there, find answers and work around bugs, undocumented features and stuff that stops working for no reason. You will be a good communicator, enjoy working opening in a collaborative environment and have the potential and capability to manage other people.

You want: To work in a young, ambitious Internet company based in Madrid? You want to work in a fast-paced startup environment with a high potential upside and not in a ’secure’ boring corporate job? We are currently able to pay a very basic salary according to Spanish standards (think the cost of a modest standard of living) + good performance-based project bonuses + future direct participation in the business for people capable of making a significant contribution.

You will: Send your profile, some work samples (links with a description of what you did in the respective projects) and your salary expectations, explain why you’re interested in Just Landed and state the earliest date from which you will be available.
